The Apprenticeship.

If you complete our Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship scheme, you achieve a Level 3 and Level 4 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship standard, and you will be fully equipped for an onward career in Maintenance.

The first year is spent entirely at Sunderland College, learning skills in basic practical concepts such as pneumatics, PLCs, hand-fitting, mechanical and electrical fault finding and machining. There will also be a theoretical element, where you will cover maths, mechanical reasoning, principles and drawing. You will also use this time to get to know the other AESC apprenticeships in your cohort, during term holidays you will be able to spend time on site at the plant. You will also complete a plant tour and spend time with the different departments within the company, which will help you decide your zone preferences for working at the plant in the second year.

Your second, third and fourth year you will begin working in the actual plant, using and applying the skills and theory you have built up in college. Your continental shift pattern will allow for important day release training at college. In addition to this, you will benefit from a host of in-house training from your mentors and managers, including safe systems at work, robot training (Yamaha, Mitsubishi) and vision system training, some of which is delivered by external training providers.

You will also gain an additional qualification (Level 4 HNC) which is started in your third year of the scheme. By year four and five, you’ll be studying advanced level transferrable qualifications that you’ll be able to rely on throughout your career, including core engineering principles, mathematics, science, mechanical and electrical and electronic applications relevant to manufacturing and engineering.

Rhys originally started in Production but took the step to move into Maintenance through the Bridging Technician Scheme, where he will receive a formal qualification at the end of the programme. He is looking forward to learning and growing in his role through continued college and on-the-job training.

The bridging
support scheme.

Here at AESC we also offer our “Bridging Support Scheme” for those recognised within Production as having the ability and motivation to follow a path in Maintenance. Although still an apprenticeship, participants on the mechatronics-focused programme maintain their same working wage while studying the 4-year scheme, where they are supported in becoming a Maintenance Technician through on-site training and college attendance.
